Sailing around the Whitsundays

September 19, 2017

If adrenalin-packed activities have got you craving peace and serenity on your tailor-made Australia holiday, a visit to the Whitsundays is just what the doctor ordered. A series of impossibly beautiful outcrops boasting bright white sands surrounded by vivid blue waters, this is the place to be if you’re after a slice of paradise.

Introducing the Whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands are located off the coast of Queensland. Most people make their way out to the heavenly islands from Airlie Beach, a lively spot, which is packed full of hotels, bars, restaurants and backpacker haunts. After a wild night in Airlie Beach, there’s no better way of recharging your batteries and catching up on sleep than a sailing trip around the Whitsundays. Although you’ll be travelling a relatively short distance, you’ll feel like you’re a world away.

The best way to see the Whitsunday Islands is to join a chartered sailing tour. There are various options available and you can spend a day, a weekend or several days at sea. Itineraries vary, but most include visits to the most iconic spots, including Daydream Island, Hamilton Island and of course, the highlight of most people’s visit, Whitehaven Beach. Whitehaven Beach is widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches due to the sparkling silica sand, which is pristine white and provides the perfect contrast to the glimmering turquoise water. If you fancy getting your pulse racing after a sedate day at sea, you could seize the opportunity to take a rafting tour of Whitehaven or hire a jet ski. Alternatively, put your towel down, soak up the rays and enjoy the tranquillity.

As you navigate the clear waters, you’ll get the opportunity to snorkel and your skipper will take you to some of the best reefs in the world. This is Great Barrier Reef territory and you’ll encounter a dazzling array of marine life. You can marvel at the colourful coral as you glide through the water. If you’re an experienced diver and you’ve got your wetsuit primed and ready, this is also an incredible spot for scuba diving.

If you’ve ever dreamed of starring in your own adaptation of Treasure Island, an escape to the Whitsundays comes highly recommended. This stunning collection of tiny islands scattered in the azure waters of tropical Queensland is the perfect place to chill out, kick back and appreciate the incredible vistas.
