Fraser or Fitzroy: Which of the Island Resorts to Choose

November 17, 2017

If you’re counting down the days until your tailor-made Australia holiday, there’s every chance that you’re planning an itinerary and looking forward to visiting some pretty spectacular places. You could spend months Down Under and not get bored, so it can be tough to decide where to spend your time if you’ve only got a few weeks. If you’re thinking about visiting one of Australia’s many beautiful islands, you may have come across the names of Fitzroy and Fraser islands. If you’re pushed for time, and you can’t get to both, here is some useful information, which may help you decide which of these incredible islands to explore.

Fraser Island

Fraser Island is a wonderful location for visitors who are looking for the best of both worlds. Renowned for action and adventure, Fraser Island is also an idyllic base for relaxing days on the beach, fishing and exploring natural wonders, such as Lake McKenzie. Hiring a 4WD is a popular thing to do and a great way to get your adrenaline pumping while you discover the delights of this unique sand bar island. Fraser Island is a hotspot on the East Coast backpacker trail and it has a lively atmosphere, but there are plenty of tranquil spots you can head to recharge your batteries. The western side of the island is quieter and it’s home to some stunning unspoiled beaches.

Fitzroy Island

A jewel in the bright blue ocean, Fitzroy Island is home to a series of picture-perfect beaches. Located off the coast of Queensland, not too far from Cairns, this beautiful island is surrounded by a network of reefs that form part of the iconic Great Barrier Reef. This is an ideal choice for divers and those looking to catch a glimpse of the exotic marine life with a snorkel and mask. The beaches are secluded, there’s a pleasant climate all year-round, and you don’t get the crowds found on Fraser Island. Activities are more focused on rest and relaxation than getting the adrenaline flowing, with the option to enjoy yoga classes on the beach and romantic sunset cruises. If you’re an animal lover, you can also take a turtle rehabilitation tour and visit the island’s turtle rehabilitation centre.

If you’re planning your itinerary and you’re dreaming of an island adventure, you won’t be disappointed. Visit Fraser Island for stunning scenery, action-packed adventure and a vibrant atmosphere or chill out on beautiful, laid-back Fitzroy Island where the pace of life is a little more sedate.
